We made it to Rome!

After 13 hours to Istanbul and two hours to Rome, we met our driver who dropped us at our cute little apartment. We thought we were a little late for our connection so we hoofed it through the Istanbul airport for about a mile … only to find we still had an hour. 🤣

It was a long trip and we’re tryin to get to sleep and get adjusted to the time difference. Exploring tomorrow!

Alas, today is our return travel day. Never as much fun and anticipation as the long day that begins a trip. We were up very early to catch the first flight of the two legs of our travel back to Los Angeles. Rome to Istanbul was an uneventful two hour flight in which they served quite a delicious breakfast — It was some sort of phyllo dough and cheese bake with a side of spinach, sides of yogurt and cheese, and bread.  We then had plenty of time to make our way to the next gate, which was probably a mile away, and which included going through security check again. Istanbul has one of the most modern, new airports in the world and is one of the largest and busiest in the world. We count ourselves among the 85 million who are passing through this airport in 2024. Because it’s so modern and new it’s laid out extremely well… It’s just so big. Corfu, Greece

Our last full day on the cruise included a stop in Corfu, Greece. Corfu is an island and a town of the same name. It’s on the north west tip of Greece very near Albania, just off the mainland. We didn’t dock until 2 PM which gave us ample time to enjoy breakfast, some cards, some relaxation, and then some lunch before we headed off the ship. We also got to see the ship dock, which is very unusual because it usually gets into port before we get out of our room in the morning. The weather was very overcast and cool, but it didn’t rain the whole time we were in town so again we got very lucky. Corfu is a resort town, but in the winter time it’s a little bit sleepy. Except, we think, when cruise ships dock, because there was plenty of shopping to do. It was a very cute little town with small streets filled with eateries, and lots of shopping with fairly good prices. Ephesus Ruins — Turkey

After docking in Izmir, Turkey early this morning, we all caught a taxi for a one hour ride to the ruins of Ephesus. We also made a short stop at what is supposed to be the last home of Mary, the mother of Jesus.  The house of Mary.  Because of the distance that we needed to travel each direction and because of the fairly short timeline that we’re in port, we had a quick tour of the ruins. The drive was very beautiful each direction. There are mountains and valleys along the whole drive. It was very agricultural: olives, fruit trees, citrus, and even tomatoes. The agriculture seemed very similar to that of the Central Valley Ruins of Ephesus: We also made a short stop to a beautiful ceramic shop that was owned by a family. They had a lot of beautiful things to purchase. It was quite expensive, but probably worth the money. We were able to get back on board by about 2 o’clock.
