Pompeii

The main reason for coming south from Rome before we go over to catch our cruise was to visit Pompeii. After some coffee in the morning, we headed over to the train station via subway to catch a train that took us to Pompeii from Naples. It was about a 30 minute ride.  Before our train departed, we did stop and have some Coffee, a sandwich, and some pastry. 







We spent about four hours walking around the ruins of Pompeii. This is definitely one of the things highest on Kristi‘s bucket list, and all of us enjoyed it very much. Almost too much to explain in this blog. Here are some of the photos.



















We hopped on the train back to Naples and it was standing room only for the 30 minute ride. Boy was that fun!

The president of the Republic of Italy and some dignitary from Spain were in town, and that made our cab ride from the train station to the apartment hellish… But we did make it. I think the hellish part was actually that we were all starving; we hadn’t eaten anything since the train station on the way to Pompeii.

I’d like to challenge anybody to find a restaurant open for dinner at 6 o’clock in Italy. That’s when we got back to our neighborhood. The restaurants that we wanted to eat were still not open for dinner. Luckily we did find another restaurant that was pretty darn good and we had some pizza and pasta.







After dinner, we had to make a quick stop at the local minimart. But we are all headed home to relax and head to bed. Today was quite the day… We enjoyed it thoroughly… But we are all ready to rest for the night.
Kristi‘s phone said we walked 7+ miles today.

Almost a year ago Marylou and Cliff told us they were ready to get their passports and take a trip. Say no more!  It’s finally time to take off. We took a leisurely drive to LAX today. Left about 9:30am, made a pit stop at Vista Del Lago then lunch at Denny’s.  Marylou, Cliff, Kristi, and Jim are headed to Rome, looking forward to showing the Wrights around Italy and then cruising to Athens and Istanbul.  We are flying from LAX to Rome with a stop to change planes in Istanbul. We arrive in Rome at 10pm local time tomorrow. Arrivaderci!

The Colosseum and Roman Forum

Today we got a fairly late start as we didn’t need to be at the Colosseum until our 12 o’clock entrance time. So we took it easy — Cliff cooked himself quite the breakfast — and just enjoyed the morning in the apartment until it was time to go. Before heading to the Colosseum, we did take a short walk to a street market where we bought some dates and looked around. Right after that, we stopped in a coffee and pastry shop to get some sweets, a drink, and Jim got one of their pizzas. It’s not the kind of pizza that you usually think of … Pizza in Italy means bread with some sort of topping. This pizza was like a thin focaccia topped with mortadella and a cheese sauce and pistachios. Despite what might seem like an odd combination, it was quite delicious. After a short Uber ride, we made it to the Colosseum with plenty of time to get in line to enter. We made it to Rome!

After 13 hours to Istanbul and two hours to Rome, we met our driver who dropped us at our cute little apartment. We thought we were a little late for our connection so we hoofed it through the Istanbul airport for about a mile … only to find we still had an hour. 🤣 It was a long trip and we’re tryin to get to sleep and get adjusted to the time difference. Exploring tomorrow!
